Post Art Library teamed up with Spiva Center for the Arts to present Print Works in The Bramlage and Willcoxon Foundation Gallery inside Joplin Public Library from Thursday, February 15-Sunday, March 31, 2024. This exhibit consists of a selection of prints from Spiva's permanent collection with several printmaking processes represented, including etchings, lithographs, screen printing, and woodcuts.
Printmaking is a unique, captivating art form that distinguishes itself through the meticulous process of creating multiple reproductions of an original image. Unlike many other artistic mediums, printmaking involves the transfer of an artist's design onto various surfaces, such as paper or fabric, using a variety of techniques. The intricate steps and craftsmanship required in each method contributes to the distinctiveness of the resulting print. These methodical, hands-on approaches foster a deep connection between artists and their final works, emphasizing the tangible and intentional nature of the creative process at work while offering a unique interplay between the technical aspects of the medium and the creative vision.
When printmaking artists must master the technical skills required for each specific method and technique, yet there's room for experimentation and serendipity. Factors such as ink consistency, pressure, and the absorbency of chosen mediums can introduce subtle variations and surprises in each print, making every impression a distinct piece of art. This dynamic combination of technical precision and the potential for unexpected outcomes adds an element of excitement and unpredictability to printmaking, setting it apart as a rich, multifaceted art form that celebrates both the artist's precision and artistic expression.
